How Are Patches Made?

PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS WITH CUSTOM PATCHES

Hello Friends,
Patches the Cat here, your resident patch specialist. A question we get asked a lot is: now that I have my custom patch,
what’s the best way to sew it on? If you want your patch to last a lifetime, sewing it on your clothing (or backpack, or
cat-sized denim vest) is the way to go. And it may be easier than you think!

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Straight pins

STEP ONE – FIND THE PERFECT MATCHING THREAD

Match the thread to the border of your patch for the most seamless look. If you can’t match that, match to the garment.
Darker thread colors disappear better than lighter colors.

STEP TWO – WASH AND IRON YOUR MATERIAL

If your garment hasn’t been washed, do so prior to attaching your patch to prevent any wonkiness due to shrinking. Your
the surface should be wrinkle-free, so if you’re able to, iron the material.

STEP THREE – ATTACH YOUR PATCH

Using straight pins, affix your patch in place. Some garments (like official uniforms) require the patch to be in a
a really specific place.

STEP FOUR – THREAD YOUR NEEDLE

Starting at the underside of the material, push the needle through the fabric and patch. Aim for the spot where the
border meets the design for the most invisible effect. Pull the thread taught to secure your stitch. Push the needle
through the front of the patch toward the back. Continue to stitch until you’ve gone around the entire patch.

STEP 6 – TIE THE KNOT

Finishing on the underside of the material, tie a tight knot in the thread. You are now ready to flaunt your custom
embroidered patch!
